Marriage Counseling & Couples Therapy

Marriage Counseling & Couples Therapy

All couples experience some degree of conflict in their lives. Often the solution is addressing those issues by not letting your less-loving interactions define your relationship. Marriage counseling and couples therapy can help.

If you are experiencing:

  • Intimacy and Sexuality challenges
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Disagreements with differing parenting styles
  • Differing perspectives on managing money
  • Depression or anxiety
  • General unhappiness with life.
  • Economic stressors
  • Extended family relationships
  • Illness
  • Grief and Loss
  • Separation or talk of divorce

Couples counseling allows you to gain insight into your relationship dynamics, communicate productively, stop conflicts before they start, and help repair any lingering emotional wounds or traumas. This process provides couples with the tools to communicate better, negotiate differences, problem solve and even argue in a productive and healthier way.

The purpose of couples counseling is helping partners learn more about each other and acquire healthy problem-solving skills. Our trained marriage counselor will interview both partners, together or individually, during the first few meetings. Afterward, we provide productive feedback. The couple may set therapeutic goals with the guidance of the therapist and develop a plan for therapy so each person knows what to expect. In couples therapy, positive results often depend on the couple’s motivation and dedication to the process.

As your treatment progresses, each partner becomes a better listener and communicator. Partners learn to support each other in new ways. It is not uncommon for conflict to arise in therapy sessions. Our marriage counselors will remain neutral and avoid taking sides. Some marriage counselors offer supplemental individual sessions to each partner as a standard part of treatment. Others may refer individuals to another therapist for further work on their own.

Relationship counseling is generally held once a week. The schedule can vary depending on the couple’s goals and whether each partner is also attending individual or group therapy sessions.

Marriage counseling can be short-term, though healing a relationship may take more time. Ultimately, couples therapy will continue for as long as the couple is committed to completing the treatment plan or until they reach resolution.

If you both are ready to learn new skills to solidify your relationship, communicating openly, improve problem solving skills, and learn to differences rationally – couple and marriage counseling is right for you!

The biggest challenge is making the first session happen.
