Chanel Medina is a dedicated Queer Afro-Latina Marriage and Family Therapist who takes great pride in serving diverse populations. She works closely with families, children, teens, couples, and individuals, including those from LGBTQ+, Latinx, and BIPOC communities. Chanel holds a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Mercy College and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with Dual Minors in Women’s Studies and Urban Studies from Lehman College.
Throughout her academic journey, Chanel actively advocated for and conducted extensive research on supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Her graduate thesis focused on this important area. Additionally, she gained valuable experience in the non-profit sector, providing case management services to individuals with severe mental illnesses, elders, formerly incarcerated individuals, and domestic violence survivors, among other populations.
Chanel brings a relational and empathic approach to her therapeutic work, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and valued while fostering meaningful therapeutic relationships. She utilizes family systems theories, such as solution-focused and structural family theories, to explore generational implications, relational dysfunctions, attachment patterns, and other influential factors that shape identity. Chanel’s goal is to assist individuals facing relational concerns throughout all life cycle changes. She has expertise in addressing depression, PTSD, anxiety, low self-esteem, as well as supporting individuals in their sexual and gender identity exploration. She empowers her clients by helping them develop coping skills to overcome challenges and navigate unforeseen circumstances with resilience.
