How Therapy Works

Therapy succeeds through persistent, gentle consideration and exploration of the body-mind, soul, and spirit expressed in thought, emotion, feeling awareness, and the sense of self. Our approach is that therapy is not something that is done ‘to’ you: it is a shared collaborative experience between the therapist, who can provide an objective and empathic perspective, and the client, who holds the expert status of their own experience. Our therapists are trained in various approaches, such as the Psychodynamic and Family Systems approach and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). These allow us to tailor the psychotherapy experience to meet your particular needs and emotional concerns. Rather than trying to match the client to a therapy, we would match the psychotherapy to the client.

Our skills lie in developing and tailoring the therapy—or combination of therapies—that works best for you. Whether working with individuals, couples, or families, we value the therapeutic relationship, sharing our own life experiences and insights where appropriate.

What should I expect from my first individual therapy session?

During your therapy appointment, you will meet with the individual therapist. They will use the first session to understand your goals for therapy and to start building a collaborative therapeutic relationship. This will also be an opportunity to discuss further what frequency of visits is best for you and what to expect from future visits.

What should I expect from ongoing individual therapy?

During the first few sessions, you and your therapist will work together to determine your goals for therapy, which will serve as a road map for your work together. Throughout your care experience at Dr. Stephen Oreski & Associates, our client care coordination team will check with you to monitor your progress, and assess what’s working and what can be improved. Please feel free to share any thoughts or concerns with us.

How frequently will I have appointments?

Typically, our clinicians recommend coming in for appointments weekly until you have accomplished your initial goals for therapy. However, this varies from person to person, and you and your therapist will work together to determine optimal cadence for your care.
